PD, Host, Producer, Engineer, Sound Design, Live Sound Engineer, etc., etc.
I'm a musician and I love music. From Bill Monroe to Mars Volta, I'm interested.
Originally from around central Ohio, I'm now working out of Los Angeles, California. I got tired of nothing happening for several months out of the year due to weather, so I moved west to remedy that. I love being in the scene out here, although the scene can get pretentious very quickly. But hey, what do you expect in LA? It's a city that's filled with people that want to play pretend every day AND sometimes call it hard!
From living and working out of South Africa to complete a master's degree to staying out until 4AM to get an interview after a show, I am dedicated to what I do. Making a record or producing a radio show, all the same. If I'm on board, I'm not happy until it's great. That's what makes working with URN so complicated; I can't change all of radio, even though I want to. I have to compromise the bigger picture in the hopes that eventually we can shape that picture to look (or in this case sound) much better. There's so much great music out there from so many places, but you almost never get to hear it on the airwaves.
Until that bigger picture is touchable, I'm happy to be a part of finding the best music we can find to get it out there every week; for the fans, for the bands, and maybe most importantly, for diversity on the radio. Popular doesn't mean it's great music. It usually means that ignorant teenagers told their parents to buy it for them. No one knew about Nick Drake, and look at his popularity now! We're trying to find great music that would otherwise go unnoticed and surely not be getting airplay and help them with both - notice and airplay.
Outside of radio, I operate REM Media Production which includes any of the following goodies: recording, producing, live sound, concert reviews, sound design, post a/v mixing, musical performance, and university course instruction in those areas.
Here's some quick facts about me:
-I've been a drummer all my life - literally. Earliest memories are being held behind a kit. I also play guitar, banjo, and Ukulele, although play might be a strong word for those instruments... noodle might be a better choice.
-I have a vinyl record collection that consists mostly of bluegrass, newgrass, and similar areas of acoustic music.
-I have been to too many concerts... probably close to 1 zillion by now. That's excluding the ones I was working for or playing in.
-I have started two of my own companies, one that I still run for all media ventures "REM Media Production." The other was a removal and recycling company. The latter paid an average of $85/hr for the 3 years I did it. WTF is wrong with me??? Radio hardly pays $8.50!
-I attended The Recording Workshop directly out of high school, and continued with an undergraduate degree focused on audio production followed by a master's degree in media management.
-I was mugged in South Africa on a bright sunny day at 11AM on a crowded street. People backed up, watched, then checked that I was still alive when it was over.
I don't have a favorite band, but I could list some URN favorites and the last 5 bands I sought out in my iTunes library:
Although I could list hundreds, here's a quick 5 favorite "Undiscovered" bands (no order)
-Earl Greyhound
-The Most Serene Republic
-Tanner Horn & The Sextronauts
-The Mess Hall
-31Knots
As for last 5 bands I wanted to hear from my library:
-Peter Rowan & Tony Rice
-Jimmy Martin
-Frank Zappa
-Bela Fleck & The Flecktones
-Ben Kweller
